Generator safety: Never operate a gas generator indoors, in a garage, on a porch, or within 20 feet of any window or door. Carbon monoxide kills. Install CO detectors on every floor.

Hurricane Supply Questions

At minimum, store 1 gallon per person per day for 3 days. FEMA recommends 7 days for home preparation. A family of 4 needs 12–28 gallons minimum. Don't forget water for pets and water for sanitation.
Focus on non-perishables that need no cooking or refrigeration: canned goods, peanut butter, crackers, granola bars, dried fruit, nuts, and shelf-stable meals. Always include a manual can opener. Rotate your stock regularly so nothing expires.
No. Never. Gas generators emit carbon monoxide — a gas you cannot smell or see. Run generators at least 20 feet from your home with exhaust pointing away from windows and doors. Install battery-operated CO detectors on every floor.
A refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours if the door remains closed. A full freezer maintains temperature for 48 hours; a half-full freezer holds for 24 hours. Use a food thermometer — discard any refrigerated food that reaches 40°F (4°C) or above for more than 2 hours.
